Technology Customer Support

March 27, 2009

Have you ever noticed that technology support basically SUCKS? I called DELL up the other day to see if an option was available for my computer or not. They said, “No” and I went on my way. Tired of getting wrong answers from them, I went ahead and tried the option anyway and lo-and-behold, it worked fine. This has happened 3 times with DELL online chat support. I called and asked if my computer (A rather dated DELL Dimension 2400) could support Wake On LAN. They said no, that the option in my BIOS had been disabled, but I went right into my BIOS, changed the setting, and can now turn my PC on remotely. Another time was when I needed a new power supply for my computer. They said that it would only support a 250 WATT power supply, yet there is a 300 WATT (Soon 420 WATT) supply in it right now. One last time was that they said that my PC doesn’t support booting from a USB stick. I can… Oh, well. I still use them to get their opinion on subjects, then when they are wrong, I send a very negative submission form back to them about how they are complete idiots.

Now for Microsoft, which isn’t that bad.  (Check this link out)  I have Zoo Tycoon 2: Zookeeper Collection and I got a scratch in it accidentally. I called them up and they sent me a BRAND NEW OEM copy of the game for FREE! That was good. Then, Saturday, my wireless keyboard/mouse combo died on me, after about two years, and I called them up and told them my symptoms, and they declared it defective, so they sent me a new wireless keyboard/mouse combo for, again, FREE, including shipping! This is good and fun, but the thing is that Microsoft, not only letting us decipher Indian speak, has absolutely no help whatsoever in their support field. They think that sending a new item, even after the warranty is up, will fix all problems. This, in retrospect, isn’t all that bad because if something dies after it’s normal life span, you can still get another one for free! You can only do this type of thing once, though, per product because they track it by product ID, but you can try it again with the new product ID from the new product, but I don’t recommend it because that is basically stealing.

So, in conclusion, if you have to deal with the technology jokers, be sure to try and get something out of it! I got my gloating privaleges to DELL’s idiotic staff, and a wireless desktop and Zoo Tycoon 2: Zookeeper Collection from Microsoft.
